Ten Hag Criticizes Man Utd's 'Unwise' Cristiano Ronaldo Tac in Defeat to Aston Villa, 3-1

In a disappointing performance against Aston Villa, Erik ten Hag has openly criticized Manchester United's strategy, labeling it as "stupid" for preventing Cristiano Ronaldo from making a significant impact on the game.

Assigned as the leading striker and captain for the Red Devils during their clash at Villa Park on Sunday, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner endured a frustrating afternoon as he struggled to find his rhythm.

Ten Hag believes that the excessive number of deep crosses provided by his teammates hindered Ronaldo's ability to contribute effectively.

When questioned about this tactical decision, Ten Hag expressed his disapproval to reporters, stating, "No, I think it was stupid to do that.

We delivered too quickly crosses in from too far and too forcing. Then, we don't help him. We have to bring in the crosses at the right moment."

Reflecting on the match, Ten Hag pointed out the missed opportunities, emphasizing the need for well-timed deliveries.

He highlighted a moment in the first half when Christian Eriksen successfully provided the ideal cross for Ronaldo, demonstrating the significance of proper timing and positioning.

As a result of Ronaldo's lackluster performance, Manchester United suffered a 3-1 defeat, further complicating their position in the Premier League standings.

Currently sitting fifth, they find themselves three points adrift of the top four and 11 points behind league leaders Arsenal.

This loss adds to Manchester United's struggles away from home, as they have now accumulated nine Premier League away defeats in 2022.

This year has become their worst in terms of away losses since 1989, when they endured 12 defeats in a single calendar year.

Looking ahead, Manchester United is set to face Aston Villa again in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Thursday, followed by a final pre-World Cup fixture against Fulham on Sunday.
